Fishing

With so much water it must come as no surprise to learn that the fishing on North Uist  (both fresh and sea water) is excellent, in particular, brown trout, sea trout and salmon not to mention mackerel, coley and pollock off the coast.  The fresh water fishing is just as good.  Permits for loch fishing are available through North Uist Estates & North Uist Angling Club .

Game and Clay Pigeon shooting can also be arranged.

Birdwatching/ wildlife

Sculpted from some of the oldest rocks in the world North Uist's unique and fascinating landscape supports a rich and varied animal and plant life. There is an RSPB reserve at Banranald , but all over the island there are opportunities to observe the wide diversity of migratory and breeding birds .

Walking & other outdoor activities

This beautiful enviroment is perhaps best explored on foot. There is a good variety of hill, costal and ridge walks to suit different abilities. Cycling too is pleasant on undulating roads or off road for the more adventurous . The Uist Outdoor Centre provides a range of activities including canoeing, sea-kayaking , diving and rock climbing - all supervised and instructed by experienced, qualified and well informed instructors.

History

Over 4000 years of human occupation can be traced through chambered cairns, duns, croft houses, hunting lodges and place names. Several well designed museums and exhibitions can tell you even more

Local Culture

The main township of North Uist is Lochmaddy where the ferry to Harris and Skye docks. There are a few hotels and shops dotted about the island and causeway links to Benbecula and South Uist enable exploration further afield. Gaelic language and culture is still strong in the Western isles. Gaelic remains the first language of many and you will often hear it spoken. Look out too, for ceilidhs and local entertainments, especially in the summer months

Local amenities

North Uist has most local amenities - bank, post office, petrol station and shops. Local to Locheport is a very good general store and butcher at Clachan. These small shops often stock a wide variety of goods so if you can't see it, ask! It should be noted that no shops are open on Sundays
