Walking is probably the most popular. Although mainly flat, the terrain of North Uist is deceiving with a good variety of hill, coastal, moor & hill walks. On the east side there is almost as much water as land! Take the opportunity to ascend the Lees above Lochmaddy and look down on the stunning lace-work of lochans and moor – there is no where else like it in the UK! On the west side the beautiful white sand beaches stretch for miles and meet the moors at The Machair – a fertile area, often traditionally farmed and with a unique ecosystem and a profusion of wild flowers in Spring and Summer.
Wherever you go you will be infused with the peace and tranquility of this unspoilt place.
Fishing With so much water it must come as no surprise to learn that the fishing on North Uist (both fresh and sea-water) is excellent. In particular, salmon & brown trout and the sea trout fishing in North Uist is among the best in Europe. Sea fishing too is unrivalled with abundant Laithe (Pollock) and Saithe (Coley), also haddock, ling and conger eel to name but a few. There are opportunities for the experienced to the novice. Although much of the fishing is through permits, there are some non-permitted lochs. Permits are readily obtained through local agents and fishing tackle, information and advice is also readily available. Tigh Alasdair has a shed for storing tackle and a freezer for storing catches. Water sports in the Uists include diving, surfing, wind surfing, kayaking and canoeing. Clear waters and a steady breeze (well sometimes more than just a breeze!) make for perfect conditions no to mention the wonderful surroundings. For organized groups The Uist Outdoor centre provides a very wide range of opportunities for all abilities – especially good for families. Again our wee shed at the cottage provide a good store for equipment. Canoe hebrides and Clearwater paddling both offer day trips, tailor made tours in and around the western isles
Tidal information
There are two ways of getting tidal information, it can be obtianed free for the next 7 days, at Admiralty EasyTide. Please note if you require more detailed infromation it can be obtained for a small cost from the same site. The tourist information office in Lochmaddy do put up tidal information on the window.
Cycling is a wonderful way to see the Uists. Being largely flat and the roads relatively quiet, cycling is a pleasure, although the prevailing SW winds can be challenging. Off road routes on mountain bikes (which can be rented locally) provide even more varied rides. Horse riding can be done at Uist Community Riding School canter across the Uist beaches on your chose steed.
Golf
There are five golf courses on the western isles, each with their own unique character.
Stornoway Golf Club - an 18 hole course which is the only course in the entire hebrides set in woodland and parkland.
Harris Golf Course - 9 hole course with some of the most wonderful views of any course that can be found in Scotland.
Benbecula Golf Club - 9 hole/18 tee course, a flat yet challenging course with again some fantastic views
Askernish Golf Course - 18 hole course established in in 1891, under gone full restoration which was finished in 2008.
Sollas Golf Course - 9 hole course, maintained by local volunteers the closest course to Tigh Alasdair.
Indoor Activities Just in case, the weather catches you out, or you are looking for something a little different, there is an excellent indoor sports facility and swimming pool at Lionacleit School. Tigh Dearg Hotel in Lochmaddy has a Leisure club as well as restaurant and bar.
